Denver Mayor Michael Hancock in his office with Denver Animal Shelter's pet of the month.

Black and White | 52 Week Project | Week 8

Happy Friday!

The theme for the 52 Week Project this week is black and white.

I don’t take too many black and white photos. I love them for creating moods, or if the contrast between light and dark is dramatic, but most of the time I just love color photos.

This week I was at the City and County building in Denver taking photos of Mayor Michael Hancock with Giza, Denver Animal Shelter’s Pet of the Month and I thought these photos would be nice in black and white.

Each month I take photos of the Mayor with an adoptable pet from the Denver Animal Shelter. I send the photos to the Mayor’s office and the Denver Animal Shelter and all of us post it on our social media accounts. The animals get much needed publicity and they often get adopted very quickly.

I love this project. Mayor Hancock is great with the animals and he and his staff seem to really enjoy them stopping by the office and we are all working together to find a home for a pet that might be a little bit harder to adopt out.

This month the Pet of the Month is Giza, she is a 10 year old Border Collie mix. She is a sweet, friendly, very well behaved lady and the person that adopts her is going to be a lucky, lucky person. You can check out her profile here.

If you’d like to see the color versions of the photos check out the Denver Animal Shelter’s or the Mayor’s Facebook page.

Here are the black and white photos of Denver Mayor Michael Hancock and Giza, Denver Animal Shelter’s Pet of the Month.

Print | 52 Week Project | Week 7

Happy Friday, everyone.

the theme for the 52 Week Project this week is Print. I picked the theme and it was partially because I wanted to show my clients that I practice what I preach!

Printing your photos is important. Most of us grew up with family photos on the walls and photo albums around the house somewhere. We got to see photos of ourselves as newborns and during special events like school plays or birthdays, and some of us even had photos with family pets in them. Sadly, some of the youngest generations aren’t growing up with photos of themselves around the house, their photos are on the parents cell phones and computers. A great place to store photos for easy access but not necessarily an heirloom.

Imagine losing your precious photos because you no longer have a way to open up that old floppy disk or CD. I know you’re thinking, “CD, I can open them now,” just wait, most new computers aren’t even coming with a drive in them. Some people are now asking for USB drives in anticipation of the disappearance of a CD but I’ve heard over and over again that a digital file or photo has a life expectancy of ten years at the most. Ten years.

People lose phones, they upgrade, they have data storage problems so they delete things they think they have copies of. I had a computer stolen and I lost about 5 years of photos. That’s a long time to miss when it comes to our precious family. So I really believe in printing.

I try to keep in mind when I’m picking a product that I want beautiful items that will last a life time. Canvases, albums, acrylics but, I also want a few fun things too. So with that in mind I’ll show you a few of the items I’ve printed with Boo and Cleo in them.

I love this canvas, it’s in my office right next to my desk. It’s a 24×30 print.  I’ve recently ordered one with Cleo’s picture as well, it should be here next week.

Dog tags are perfect for a pet photographer! I have one with Cleo and one with Boo Radley. The edge on Boo Radley’s tag is to protect them from scratching each other.

This year I made Christmas ornaments and I loved them so I bought a few more. I wanted a heart shaped ornament with a Valentine’s Day image on it.

This is the acrylic print of Boo Radley’s “American Beauty” inspired photo. This photo was for another one of the 52 Week Projects and the theme was Red.

I also love these cute little albums, I had them printed for Boo and for Cleo.

It’s really important for me to have printed images of Cleo. He’s been gone two years now, I can’t take any more photos of him and the thought of losing the digital images is heart breaking. I have back ups just in case and I also have prints that will last a lifetime. I already lost my handsome boy, I don’t want to lose my images to outdated digital technology.

So do yourself a favor, protect those images, back up, back them up again somewhere else and print them!

Wide Open | 52 Week Project | Week 6

Happy Friday,

the theme for the 52 Week Project this week is open. Ok, busted. It was wide open but Boo wouldn’t open his mouth, maybe he had stage fright, so now it’s, “open” as in open mic night.

Boo Radley was pretending to be a rock star and I was using my OCF to play with lighting. For the people who are not photographers OCF is off camera flash. They are small portable lights that are really pretty awesome for lighting on the go or in the studio.

Here are photos of Boo Radley the rock star.
