Plenty of Fire Hydrants For Everyone!

I’m in New York this week for a little vacation and was pleasantly surprised to see how many dogs there are in Manhattan. There are coiffed tiny dogs and great big slobbery dogs walking along with their owners. I’ve even seen a couple of dogs in baby strollers too. I hope to have my camera out and ready next time I see that!!

This morning I was walking in SoHo and found the cutest little dog park with plenty of fire hydrants for everyone. I had to get a couple of photos. Unfortunately, I was there very early and no pups were up and ready for their morning romp so dogs aren’t included this time around.

52 Week Project: Week 30 – Style

Happy, happy Friday.

This week’s theme is style. We can pick our photography style or our pet’s style. Boo is the style king always looking good in all black but I thought I’d go with my style.

When I’m shooting in my studio or outside, with or without lights, the one thing I do with each session, is try to find a silly side. I think it’s obvious with my name StinkDog Photos that I like the silly or ridiculous. The tributes I did for I Love Lucy and Lady and the Tramp are silly on a large scale but most of the time it’s just brief moments of silly.

This week I was on the east coast shooting a wedding and visiting my friend and sister in-law, Bridgette, who is also a photographer, her company is PlayonPhoto. We had fun shooting a wedding, taking shots of her pets, and even taking night time shots of sparks and flames. Both of us always wanting to learn something new and grow as photographers. It wasn’t a long visit, just 3 days, and much of that was working but I’m looking forward to visiting again soon.

These shots are just a few of the silly shots I got of Bridgette’s horse Turby shaking his head and making faces. He’s a beautiful boy and these photos don’t really do him justice, they are just the silly things I find amusing and aim for in each shoot even if it’s just one shot. Bridgette and I had a good time playing and taking photos of him, silly Turby. I’ll post more photos of Turby that show his more serious side soon.

Have a fun and silly week.

52 Week Project: Week 29 – Low Angle

Happy Friday, everyone!

This week’s 52 Week Project is Low Angle. I feel like I shoot from a low angle most of the time. I spend a surprising amount of time rolling around on the ground for a women in her… um, well, for my age. ;P  This week was no different.

I shot this underneath the window of our house. I thought Boo looking sad out the window was appropriate. He has a lot of anxiety when he sees other dogs on walks, he gets so excited he sounds like he’s screaming. I’ve interpreted his screams as, “OMG! Look! Another Dog! I Want To Play! OMG! OMG! OMG! Another Dog!” We’ve been working on training and he’s getting much better but we tend to take walks at times when there are fewer dogs out just for my own sanity. So when Boo notices other dogs walking outside he gets a sad, sad face and I think he’s upset they are playing without him, “Look mom, all the other kids are out!”

Don’t pity the Boo. He still gets plenty of playtime with other dogs I just prefer I’m not attached to him by a leash when he does.

52 Week Project: Week 28 – Fixed Focal Length

This week’s theme for the 52 week project is Fixed Focal Length. We are allowed to use either a prime lens or a zoom lens taped down so you can only use one focal length and try to create a variety of photos without being able to zoom or change lenses.

I’m a fan of prime lenses and my favorite is my 50mm lens but this week I thought I’d try another prime lens so I used my 24mm. It’s a canon L-series lens. I really love this lens but haven’t quite mastered it for pet photography. It’s fun to get really close shots because it distorts objects that are really close to the lens. But it’s also really great if you want to get a close up picture of a dog or person and also get quite a bit of landscape in your photo as well.

Those features made a perfect lens for this past weekend. We were hiking in a gorgeous place in Colorado called Devil’s Thumb. It’s an access trail to the Continental Divide.

Next up is Blue Amrich Pet Photography in Boston, MA. Check out all the pet photographers in this week’s blog ring until you get back to StinkDog Photos.

Have a great week everyone!!

52 Week Project: Week 27 – Color

Happy Friday, everyone!

The theme for this week’s 52 Week Project is Color. I really love the Polaroid collages that David Hockney made and I wanted to try to make a more updated version of it. Boo is of course having a rest after a walk and training session so it was a good time to take several photos of him to put together. I colored each one differently to make it a little more interesting.
